IMEG was hired by a Nebraska based Irrigation System & Road Safety Infrastructure Manufacturer to develop a layout for material relocation in a specified space. In addition, the consolidation of inventories within various locations of plant were also considered. 

THE PROBLEM

  • Plan for construction of new building resulting relocation of 60,000 sq. ft. floor space of materials and aisles from existing area
  • Limited space within the plant
  • Mixed inventories (raw materials, WIP, finished product, galvanized parts)
  • Store galvanized parts in covered space (problem with zinc run-off)

THE PLAN

  • Analyze floor space requirement for the relocating materials
  • Calculate the space of available unutilized/underutilized racks
  • Segment parts into raw-materials, WIP and finished parts to relocate in different areas of plant minimizing traveling distance
  • Consolidate materials and add vertical space in new layout
  • Standardize the aisle width in new layout
  • OSHA consideration (high voltage lines and gas pipes) during layout development

THE RESULTS

  • Reduced floor space requirement by 15% after consolidation and utilization of racks
  • Galvanized inventories relocated into covered space
  • Finished inventories relocated closer to shipping area minimizing travel distance
