IMEG was hired by a leading builder of manufactured and modular homes. The customer has multiple manufacturing plants which build homes to meet appropriate state, national, and international building standards.
THE PROBLEM
Development of a new manufacturing plant including main assembly and subassembly lines
Insufficient manufacturing capacity
Inefficient manufacturing process including large travel distance between processing and point-of-use locations
THE PLAN
Developed an improved plant layout
Completed an analysis using MODAPTS to estimate process times
Developed a work combination chart to help understand manning usage and requirements
Completed floor space and travel distance analyses to improve floor space usage and reduce travel distances
THE RESULTS
Improved layout and floor space utilization for subassembly areas reducing manufacturing area by 6.8%
Material storage re-organization led to a 45% reduction in travel distance
9% increase in available space for material storage
Verified that process could meet capacity requirements
